The Groggy Doggy - Bungay 26 December 2009

The annual Groggy Doggy Cross Country Race, organised by the Bungay Black Dog Running Club, took place over Outney Common on Boxing Day, with an event record of over 150 competitors lined up at the start including 20 Black Dogs. It was a beautiful sunny yet chilly day for the relaxed and very jolly affair. Competitors ranged from serious contenders for the much coveted prizes to those who came dressed as elves just out to burn off their Christmas puddings. There were also dogs of all shapes and sizes, ready to drag their handlers over the ups and downs of the common. The race was started by John Groom, Bungay Town Reeve. The course proved to be tough with plenty of mud and water to negotiate. Some runners were immersed up to their necks in icy cold water from the melted snow and enlarged River Waveney.
In the one lap, 2.5 mile race, Tim Topper of the Norfolk Gazelles, with his dog Poppy, were the first to cross the finish line in a very respectable time of 15 minutes 44 seconds. Junior Black Dog runner Kieran McMorran was first male in a super time of 17:26. Claire Caiger of Ipswich Harriers was the first female in 18:09. The two lap, 5 mile race was won by Craig Hopkins of Swansea Harriers in 29:14. Nickki Neil of Belgrave Harriers was the first female home in 37:03. Roland Shaw was the first Black Dog Runner to finish in an excellent 41:24 (39th). Helen Hornsey was the first female Black Dog in 47:03 (67th).
The club wishes to extend its thanks to everyone who helped to make the race a great success but especially John Groom, John Warnes, Waveney Trucks and The Outney Common owners.

The Turkey Trot – Beccles 13 December 2009

The Turkey Trot 10 mile road race, organised by the Waveney Valley Athletics Club, took place on Sunday December 13th at the Beccles Sports Centre. The winner was Carl Prewer of Lowestoft Road Runners in 55:17. Ten Bungay Black Dog Runners were amongst the 135 finishers on a very wet day. Anyone still running after 80 minutes endured a severe rainstorm all the way to the finish.
Robbie James did well finishing in 28th position (67:16), followed by Roland Shaw 56th (74:55), Bruce Rayner 66th (76:34) and Nigel Gilham 67th (76:48). Suffolk Cross Country Series (3) – Woodbridge 6 December 2009

The third Cross Country race of the season took place on Sunday 6th December at Woodbridge over a tough 5 mile course that was both muddy and sandy and had some testing inclines. Luton Marathon - 6 December 2009

Meanwhile on the same day, Ian Taylor did his 12th marathon of 2009 at Luton. The three lap course is run mostly on estate roads and footpaths in the far north of the town. Coming just two weeks after his gruelling 38 mile Ultra across the Cambridgeshire Fens, Ian was content just to "jog" around the course enjoying the views, despite winds which seemed to grow stronger on each lap. He finished in 3 hours 41 minutes in 199th place out of 493.

City of Norwich Half Marathon – 30 November 2009

The popular and well organised 25th Norwich Half Marathon was run on Sunday November 29th with 2233 competitors taking part. The pre-race downpours subsided just in time for the start and it made a pleasant change to run the event in sunshine. The course had also been modified to remove the dreaded hill up to the Norfolk Showground which helped runners improve their times. 17 Bungay Black Dog Runners took part.
Chris Chorley continued his excellent form coming 164th (1:31) followed by Mark Fawbert, 305th (1:36), Richard Dye 451st (1:40), David Waterman 606th (1:44) and Nigel Gilham 694th (1:46). Bobbie Sauerzapf was a few seconds behind at 700th, coming 5th in her age group. James Samkin was 1031th (1:53), Bob Paul 1244th (1:57), Karen Gedge 1310th (1:58), and Hazel Garrity 1501th (2:03) was 9th in her age group. Philip Neave came 1657th (2:07) while Bruce Rayner and Karen Waters, 1685th finished together in 1685th , 40 seconds later. This was a personal best time for Karen. Robin Farrar recovering from injury was 1731st (2:09) and 14th in his age group. Kate Grimble was 1942th (2:17) while Alison Rogers completed her first half marathon in 2173th (2:35). Adnams 10k – Southwold 22 November 2009

The first Southwold 10km race, sponsored by Adnams took place on Sunday November 22nd. Various members of the Bungay Black Dog Runners Club helped out with the marshalling and organisation while 8 club runners took advantage of the new local event. The windy two lap circuit was based around the harbour and common. Of the 346 finishers, Nigel Gilham was the first Black Dog home in 73rd (47:08) closely followed by Bruce Rayner in 79th (47:17). The inaugural Southwold 10km proved very popular and it is hoped that the event is repeated next year.

Hereward Relay - Peterborough to Ely 22 November 2009

Three teams of Bungay Black Dog Runners competed in the multi-terrain Hereward Relay on Sunday. The race starts from Peterborough Cathedral and follows the Hereward Way for 38.4 miles to Ely Cathedral, crossing over bridleways, fields, bridges and tracks. The cold, windy and occasional downpours did not deter 107 teams from finishing. There are four stages (in miles); 6.48, 11.75, 10.30 and 9.60. The winning team completed the course in 3:47:23. ‘Bungay Dangerous To Know’ Team (Sally Nicholls, Richard Dye, Robbie James, Andrew M Smith) finished 71st in 5:16:16. ‘Bungay Mad’ Team’ (Chris Chorley, Bobbie Sauerzapf, Philip Neave, Craig Anderson) were 81st in 5:28:19 and ‘Bungay Bad Team’ (David Cook, Bob Paul, Robin Farrar, Neil Thomas) were 106th in 6:21:10 (two of this team are over 65!)
At the same time, Black Dog Ian Taylor ran the entire course himself, finishing 2nd of the 5 ‘ultra’ runners in 5:44:26, and ahead of 13 teams. This is the second year he has completed the entire course adding to his 10 marathons this year. In contrast to the blizzards experienced last year, this time runners were at the mercy of strong winds especially as the flat topography of the Cambridgeshire Fens provided few buildings or hedgerows to cut down the wind speeds. At times Ian felt as if the head wind was slowing him to little more than walking pace, especially during Stage 4 east of Welney, by which time he had already covered the marathon distance of 26.2 miles. He was cheered home by members of his Bungay Black Dog Running Club full teams.

Stage 1: 6.48 miles 27th Chris Chorley (BM) 0:43:20 95th Sally Nicholls (BD2K) 0:58:12 109th David Cook (BB) 1:14:14

Stage 3: 10:30 miles 35th< b>Richard Dye (BD2K) 1:20:54 104th Philip Neave (BM) 1:49:05 108th Robin Farrar (BB) 1:57:45

Suffolk Cross Country Series (1) – Framlingham 1 November 2009

The horrendous wet weather on Sunday 1 November did not put off an impressive turn out of Bungay Black Dog Runners to the first Cross Country race of the season. Of the 164 runners competing in atrocious conditions, Robbie James 25th, was the first of 18 Black Dogs home in a time of 31:34. Lynn Emmett was 41st (33:21) and narrowly outside the top three women. Sixteen Bungay Black Dog Runners participated in the popular Great Yarmouth 10km race. The hot temperatures combined with some windy stretches did not put off 529 competitors. First Black Dog home was Chris Chorley, 66th in 42:05.Richard Dye, 82nd was only a minute behind 43:08.Nigel Gilham was 142nd (46:32),Bruce Rayner, 158th (47:14), and David Waterman, 163rd (47: 25). Beachy Head Marathon - 24 October 2009

Bungay Black Dog Runner Ian Taylor concluded his Autumn Marathon Challenge (four in four weeks) with the multi terrain Beachy Head Marathon near Eastbourne, East Sussex on Saturday 24th October. With 3,500 feet of ascents and descents there was hardly any flat land anywhere on the course. Tough on the best of days, bad weather made it even more challenging this year with rain during the race. This caused exceedingly slippery conditions on the chalk underfoot especially on some of the almost perilous descents. There was also a strong wind to contend with and sea mists reduced visibility on the high ground. Competitors tackled various hills including Beachy Head (535ft) and a series of chalk hills known as the Seven Sisters all in the last six miles of the course. Earlier they had to climb three hills around 700ft high. As an indication of the effort involved, it took Taylor 70 minutes to cover the first nine miles and almost 60 minutes to complete the last six. The equivalent of 30 flat miles, runners are told to allow 40-50 minutes longer than for a "normal" road marathon and Taylor finished in 4 hours 3 minutes 43 seconds in 107th place out of about 1,000 runners.

Snowdonia Marathon - 24 October 2009

On Saturday, Colin Whale took part in the 27th Snowdonia Marathon in ferocious wet and windy conditions which battered the runners for the first five miles who then faced a head wind for the rest of the race. Colin did really well to complete the race in a slower time of 4:56 considering the tricky conditions.

Mallorca Half Marathon - 18 October 2009

Bungay Black Dog Robbie James flew to warmer, but wetter, climes to compete in the Mallorca Half Marathon on Sunday 18 October. This was held in the capital city of Palma, with a total of over 7,000 runners competing the full marathon, the half marathon, a 10k and also a nordic walk. It was an interesting course around the bay, followed by many twists and turns through the streets and alleys of the town. Light drizzle making it quite slippery on the stone and cobble roads and paths. He was very pleased with his time of 1:30:06, and especially his placing of 118th out of 2,883 finishers.

Amsterdam Marathon - 18 October 2009

Ian Taylor continued his "Autumn Marathon Challenge" on Sunday 18th October when he ran the Amsterdam Marathon for the second consecutive year. The one lap course includes a 10k section along both banks of the River Amstel together with a delightful section through the Vondelpark and various sections alongside the city canals. With temperatures of 10ºC and no wind, conditions were ideal and Taylor completed in a chip time of 3:2:12 being three minutes faster than his 2008 time. He was delighted with his performance as this was his third marathon in as many weeks and felt the whole race went extremely well. He finished in 441st place out of about 6,000 competitors.

Saxons 5m approx - Saxmundham 18 October 2009

The weather was excellent for the inaugural running of this race on Sunday. 62 runners completed the course and 5 Bungay Black Dogs took part. The first to finish was Roland Shaw in 34:42 (15th). David Waterman had a good race, managing 38:28 (25th) and first Black Dog lady home was Karen McMorran in an incredible time of 43:40 (44th). Novices Alison Rogers and Jacques Groen both had excellent times finishing in 55th & 56th positions in 51:20 and 51:59 respectively.

Leicester Marathon – 11 October 2009

After the rigours of the Isle of Wight Marathon the previous Sunday, Ian Taylor headed for the East Midlands this weekend to run in the Leicester Marathon. Although nowhere near as hilly, this race contained 157m of ascents and descents and equated to 26.79 flat miles. The race toured the city centre, including the market, followed by a lengthy section along the Melton Road in order to visit some delightful Leicestershire villages to the north of the city. On the return, the race used footpaths through some of the city parks. The four, and the final six, miles were shared with 1646 runners competing in the Leicester Half Marathon. Once again weather conditions were ideal, and Taylor finished in a gun time of 3:11:51 which earned him 79th place out of 702. He felt he ran well, especially in light of the arduous nature of the previous weekend's marathon.

Peterborough Half Marathon - 11 October 2009

The Perkins Great Eastern Run isn't a race for those who go for architecture or scenery but it does have a great atmosphere. The 3,000 runners have closed roads round the city and the locals turn out in good numbers to clap, cheer, wave, play music, hand out sweets and water and do High 5s. The race finishes in a park with fun fair and burgers. The day can be recommended for non-running partners too because they can go off and do some retail therapy while the runners enjoys themselves elsewhere. (The shops are only 5 minutes walk from the start and finish). Chris Chorley was a full 7 seconds slower than last year, finishing in 1:29:28, being also 2 positions lower at 184th out of a finishing field of 2780. Bobbie Sauerzapf knocked a further 1:40 of her 2008 result, and came home in 1:46:39 (897th)

Autumn 10k - Coltishall - 4 October 2009

Early autumn is a very busy running season and there were several local events on offer, and 8 Bungay Black Dogs tackled the Coltishall Jaguars Autumn 10km. It was excellent running weather for the field of 138 runners and the race was on quiet country roads just north of Norwich. Good cakes and tea at the finish were an added incentive. The first Black Dog to finish was Robbie James 40:30 (26th) followed just over a minute later by Chris Chorley 41:34 (34th). In77th place on his first outing for a while was David Punt in 48:31. First female home was Bobbie Sauerzapf 48:57 (78th), and Neil Thomas feeling the after-effects of the Jersey marathon the previous weekend managed 50:34 (92nd). Sally Nicholls managed exactly 55:00 (110th) and Katy James showed everyone else how to do it by winning 2nd FV60 prize in a time of 1:05:10(130th). And final at 132nd was Jacques Groen in 1:07:37

Felixstowe Half Marathon - 4 October 2009

This popular race which starts & finishes on the sea front had good running conditions, with sunshine and a moderate breeze. 5 Bungay Black Dogs travelled down by minibus with their supporters. There was a field of 467 finishers and the first club runner home was Richard Dye in 1:36:54 (65th). Nigel Gilham had a good race, finishing in 1:45:17 (143rd). Bob Paul was next in 1:54:12 (247th) and Karen Gedge improved on her time from last year by getting in under the 2hrs in 1:58:44 (305th). Robin Farrar, still fighting injury, came home in 2:11:36 (404th) Junior club runner Kieran McMorran, produced a magnificent performance and was 2nd in the fun run, of just over 1 mile, despite being placed in the under 17 group.

English Half Marathon – Warrington 4 October 2009

Tom Pullinger took part in the inaugural New Balance English Half Marathon at Warrington, finishing with a p.b. of 1:45:11 in 399th position out of 1495 runners. The race started in heavy rain and finished in glorious sunshine. The course was mostly on road, through some parks, crossed the River Mersey twice (by bridge rather than by Ferry) and finished with lap of the Victoria Park Arena Athletics Track.

Isle of Wight Marathon - 4 October 2009

Whilst his colleagues were running in Felixstowe and Coltishall on Sunday 4th October, Ian Taylor was overseas working up a sweat at the 53rd Isle Of Wight Marathon. It has been run continuously since 1957, making it the longest running (and one of the first to be held) in the U.K. This hilly marathon is very challenging and is not to be treated lightly. The single lap course covers over half of the island, starting and finishing at Ryde, The course was so interesting and so scenic that the miles just seemed to tick by. Ideal weather conditions and the fact that Taylor does most of his training on open roads made this a great race for him. The course has 1505 feet of ascent and descent, and he soon moved into fifth place. A number of runners did overtake him on the hills about 6 miles into the race but they did too much too soon and Taylor returned the compliment after 22 miles and finished well ahead of them. He was very pleased to finish 8th out of 117 especially as he received the 3rd Male Vet 40 prize. His time of 3:18:19 was 83 seconds faster than he achieved in the flat Lee Valley Marathon in September.

Diss 15 & 7.5 mile - 27 September 2009

Unseasonably warm weather accompanied the running of the Diss AC 15 and 7.5 mile races on Sunday. Three Black Dogs completed the 2 lap 15 mile event with a further three in the 7.5 miler. Of the 78 finishers in the longer race, Chris Chorley was 28th (1:47), Richard Dye, 36th (1:54) and Bobbie Sauerzapf, 53rd (2:07). 79 runners completed the 7.5 mile race including excellent performances by David Waterman in 59:25 (22nd), Helen Hornsey, 28th (1:00) and Philip Neave, 53rd (1:09).

Jersey Marathon - 27 September 2009

Black dog Neil Thomas completed the Jersey Marathon on the same hot day in a great time of 4:18. The breathtakingly beautiful course started and finished in St Helier and was well supported by the locals.

The Round Norfolk Relay 19/20 September 2009

The 23rd Round Norfolk Relay took place over the weekend of September 19th/20th. As the longest multi-terrain relay in the UK, it is a 193 mile run around the perimeter of Norfolk in 17 stages. The logistics are complicated because some stages require some navigational skills, six stages are off road with sand and shingle to tackle and there are no water stations. On the road sections, the runners are accompanied by a cyclist and minibus support. This was the second year that Bungay Black Dog Running Club have entered and team chiefs Sue Potter and Karen Gedge did a great job of co-ordinating the seventeen runners to the right locations at the right times, along with accompanying cyclists, minibus drivers and getting timekeepers in place.

The customary BBDRC team spirit was to the fore and the team did incredibly well. Facing elite (and much younger) runners, the Black Dogs were 44th out of 55 teams and well within the time limit of 28 hours. In fact the team was just six minutes adrift of their estimated finish time and completed the race in 27:08:51. Highlights included Karen McMorran who in her debut multi terrain race, tackled the tough Burnham Overy Staithe to Wells section. This leg passes through the Holkham estate and is notorious for the energy sapping sandy going. Ian Taylor put in his customary strong performance to complete the nearly 20 mile Scole to Thetford leg in 2 hours 20 minutes. Colin Whale, running despite a leg injury toughed out the preceding 19.6 miles from Gillingham. It was a hard but enjoyable weekend and one they hope to repeat in 2010.

The stage results were:
Stage 1: (16.32 miles) Bob Paul (2:34), Stage 2: (14.06 miles) Chris Chorley (1:45), Stage 3: (5.39 miles) Karen McMorran (00:52), Stage 4: (12.76 miles) Andrew Smith (1:48), Stage 5: (8.61 miles) Sally Nicholls (1:31), Stage 6: (7.86 miles) Darryl Oldman (00.58), Stage 7: (9.24 miles) Robbie James (1:02), Stage 8: (7.52 miles) Nigel Gilham (00.55), Stage 9: (11.3 miles) Karen Gedge (1:42), Stage 10: (15.08 miles) Neil Thomas ( 2:11), Stage 11: (19.6 miles) Colin Whale (3:08), Stage 12: (19.67 miles) Ian Taylor (2:20), Stage 13: (13.25 miles) Bobbie Sauerzapf (1:50), Stage 14: (8.8 miles) John Wharton (1:05), Stage 15: (7.2 miles) David Gilbert (00.59), Stage 16: (5.49 miles) Sue Potter (00.53), Stage 17: (11.73 miles) Roland Shaw (1:27).

Great North Run - Newcastle upon Tyne 20 September 2009

Bungay Black Dog runner Robin Farrar was the club's sole representative at last Sunday's Great North Run. With a field of 54,000 this is the world's biggest half marathon. The weather was perfect at the beginning, but gradually got hotter as the race progressed. Robin's time of 2:07:35, in the circumstances was acceptable, although he was 10 minutes slower than last year in his fifth consecutive appearance at this event. He was 58th in his age group and 15,825th overall. Also taking part was Margaret Sheppard from Bungay who power -walked the course and achieved an excellent time of 3:01:03 coming in at 35,132nd.

Lee Valley Marathon – 12 September 2009

Just six days after his last marathon, Bungay Black Dog runner Ian Taylor travelled to Hertfordshire to compete in the “three2go” trail marathon from St Margarets to Hackney Marshes along the towpath of the River Lea Navigation. The Holyfield Loop is slightly different each year and always manages to include sections of footpath around the former gravel workings at Cheshunt new to Taylor despite growing up in the area in the 1970s. He quickly moved into third place within the first 500m, and maintained this position for 25 miles until, sadly, he was overtaken near the filter beds at Hackney Marshes. He finished fourth out of 126 in 3:19:42. (An average of 12.377kph) and more than four minutes ahead of the next competitor. He was third in 2008 and eighth in 2007 by comparison. The weather was hot and sunny throughout, which extended Taylor's time somewhat.

Wolverhampton City Marathon – 6 September 2009

Bungay Black Dog runner Ian Taylor wandered to Wolverhampton to compete in the Wolverhampton City marathon where he finished 36th out of 306 in a time of 3:16:01. The two lap course was surprisingly hilly in places although he felt that he performed well, in ideal weather conditions. The final two to three miles of a marathon always seem tough but Taylor was heartened when he was told by a fellow competitor after the finish that he had "steamed passed him looking very strong still, only yards from the finish". Earlier in the race Taylor was amused to be running in Halesworth Road, Walpole Street and a road known as Overstrand. 1211 runners competing in the Half Marathon shared a common start time so the second lap was quiet by comparison. Taylor began to lap some of the Half Marathon back runners at 22 miles. The people of Wolverhampton (known as Wulfrunians) are a friendly bunch and gave the runners lots of encouragement and support. There was also a Half Marathon Relay Challenge (20-30 teams) and 442 cyclists tackled the 20k cycle ride.

This tough course involves a total of 1,650 ft of climbing and luckily the Welsh rains did not arrive until after the finish. These are graded bronze, (easiest/slowest), to platinum, (hardest/fastest). Most mortals can manage bronze. Only the chosen few can reach diamond. This was a remarkable performance, considering that 18 months ago Judy could hardly get out of bed because of rheumatoid arthritis.

Canterbury Half Marathon – 24 May 2009

Last weekend a group of Bungay Black Dog Running Club members and friends travelled to Canterbury to compete in the Half Marathon. 778 runners completed this testing course, but many more had begun it. Starting on the edge of the town, the route went uphill for the first mile and then continued to follow a hilly route through the picturesque Kent countryside. The residents of the few little villages were out in force to spur on the runners. The heat had an effect upon the performances, but thankfully some of the little lanes were shaded by hedges. The sting in the tail was a mile long hill of 1 in 10 between miles 10 & 11 which resulted in many competitors actually walking quicker than those attempting to run up it. Club Captain John Wharton, who also organised the trip, was 1st Black Dog to cross the line in a time of 1:43:17 in 128th place. Andrew Smith was next home in 1:50:24 (243rd) with Nigel Gilham less than 2 minutes later in 1:52:14 (280th). Next Black Dog to finish was Neil Thomas in 1:56:24 (338th). The first Black Dog female was Judy Potter in 2:01:13 (409th) closely followed by Karen Gedge in 2:01:42 (416th). Colin Whale who has run in Snowdonia and on Everest found the course to his liking and came in on 2:06:35 (477th). Robin Farrar, not a lover of heat & hills, finished in 2:14:13 (592nd) and Steve Cant, nursing cracked ribs from a recent car accident, was merely pleased to finish with a time of 2:26:29 (693rd). Bob Jack, running a short distance for a change, managed 2:42:00 (727th) and finally, David Cook, the club’s oldest runner finished in 2:46:04 (762nd).

Luxembourg Marathon - 23 May 2009

Bungay Black Dog runner Ian Taylor travelled to Luxembourg on 23rd May to compete in the Europe Marathon. Billed as "The Night Run", the race started at 6pm which was a good thing as temperatures were still 25ºc The start was rather congested as marathon runners mingled with many thousands attempting the Half Marathon and 250+ team marathon relay runners. Support from the spectators was marvellous as the course snaked its way through the Central Business District, various city parks, housing estates, industrial areas and over three bridges across the gorge (Le Grund) which cuts through Luxembourg City. It was not a particularly fast course for a big city marathon, as indicated by the winning time of 2-19:15 by elite Kenyan athlete John Ngeno.

Taylor performed well despite the humidity and once the routes of the two races diverged he had long stretches of road to himself and could maintain a steady pace of 4:34 per kilometre. Soon after the 30km marker he overtook, and finished ahead of, elite female Ethiopian athlete Solomet Abate-Woldeab. This is the first time he has got anywhere near an elite runner in a race.

His chip time of 3:12:50 earned him 40th place out of 998 males and 45th place out of 1,185 finishers overall. He completed the course in daylight despite the race name.

Woodbridge 10k - 17 May 2009

On a very wet & windy Sunday, the Woodbridge Shufflers organised "Round the Town" 10k took place. This is a very popular race with a maximum of 700 entries allowed and the entry limit was reached back in March. The course is two laps through the centre and outskirts of Woodbridge taking in a couple of steep climbs. Despite the rain the local support was excellent and 2 Black Dogs managed to gain entry into the race. Nigel Gilham had a good run and beat his target time of 47mins by 30 seconds to finish in 165th place and was 4th V55 Male. Bob Jack, more used to running longer distances, finished in 63:01 in 571st place.

Bognor Prom 10K - Bognor Regis 17 May 2009

On Sunday 17th May Black Dog Ian Taylor competed in the ever popular Bognor Regis Promenade 10k, which as the name suggests, is entirely flat. Attracting a high quality field and tough competition for the large cash prizes, Taylor completed the first 5k in 19 minutes which took him past Butlins and through the streets of Felpham.

This year, in contrast to the previous two, there was a very strong headwind for the second half of the race along the seafront and most runners were down on their times. However Taylor remained strong and gave it his all to finish in 37th place out of 1,394 in a chip time of 39:34, being 50 seconds faster than last year and an improvement of 5 places.

“6 In the Park” 5K – Hove 14 May 2009

On Thursday evening 14th May Ian Taylor competed in a 5km race held in Hove Park as part of the "Six in the Park" summer series, the proceeds from which go to Sense, the dead-blind charity. Sadly the field at this event, which was once 80+, continues to shrink with only 22 competitors this time. On a totally still evening, Taylor performed well and settled into fourth position after the first kilometre which he then held for the remainder of the race. He finished in 18:51 and also ran to and from the race venue from his house in central Brighton; a round trip of about five miles.

Great Yarmouth 5 mile series (2) - 6 May 2009

11 Bungay Black Dogs took part in the 2nd of the Yarmouth 5 mile evening races on an evening that was warm with a blustery wind. As this race was a Grand Prix event there was a good turnout of 180 runners and Jim Cooper was first Black Dog to finish in a time of 34:51 in 64th place. This was a good effort as Jim has been injured since running Bungay Marathon and this was his first race since then. Chris Chorley, just pipped by Jim, finished in 73rd place in 35:07mins, again an excellent run, as Chris & Bobbie had completed a non stop 100 mile walk over the weekend! Next in was Nigel Gilham who improved his time by 26 seconds from the 1st race finishing 95th in a time of 36:43. Neil Thomas finished in 128th place in a time of 39.44 with Bob Paul just behind him in 40.37 (131st), closely followed by Bobbie Sauerzapf 40:50 (132nd). The race is run on footpaths alongside the Bure Valley narrow gauge steam railway between Aylsham and Wroxham. Bobbie Sauerzapf finished 37th in 1:14:25, and Philip Neave who is running well at the moment, came home in 1:16:57 (48th) The runners had a lift back on the miniature railway to Aylsham.

Flora London Marathon – 26 April 2009

Ian Taylor was one of 5 Bungay Black Dog runners competing in this year’s Flora London Marathon. Taylor was off to a fine start, making good use of his “Good For Age” entry. He ran the South London section very strongly. Jamaica Road was tackled at a fine pace ensuring that he passed the Half Marathon point in a time of 1:28:01, on schedule for a three hour finish. He enjoyed much friendly banter with other runners one of whom he beat in the previous weeks Bungay Marathon! He was also recognised by members of other East Anglian and Sussex running clubs. Unfortunately around the 25km point Taylor began to feel the effects of the heat and commented how "he had never drunk so much water during a marathon!" He finished in 1,823rd place in a time of 3:13:3 which he was happy with, especially when one considers that this was his third marathon this month. Mark Fawbert, running his 2nd London Marathon, had a very good race to finish in a personal best of 3:22:38 knocking 11 minutes off his 2005 time. Richard Dye, although slower than last year, still had an enjoyable race, finishing in a time of 3:50:52. Richard was raising money for Meningitis Research Foundation.

Carol Maycock & Christine Potterwho both got places in London via the club ballot sent in this report. "London Marathon 2009 day loomed bright and sunny and very warm apparently in the 20s. It felt like the 30s. What a day thousands and thousands of people all running in the same direction and for lots of different causes. Christine and Carol had a great day and were able to meet up before the race but had to start separately. The crowds were unbelievable, very encouraging and very very loud, great for someone who had a headache before they started! Christine did brilliantly recording an excellent time of 4:22:07 (25th FV60) with Carol just behind in 4:23:43.

Well done to all the runners!

Great Yarmouth 5 mile series (1) - 22 April 2009

Bruce Rayner & Robin Wilson had a good tussle with both hoping to break 35 mins with Bruce finishing in 35:09 in 59th place with Robin just behind in 35:35 in 69th place. Next was Nigel Gilham who finished in 37:09 in 84th position. 3 Black Dogs then finished together in105,6,7th places with Bobbie Sauerzapf, having run the Bungay Marathon just 3 days earlier, finishing in 40:07 then Philip Neave in 40:09 & Bob Paul in 40:23. Trowse 10k - 12 April 2009

After the exertions of running/marshalling the Good Friday 10k 7 Bungay Black Dog runners took part in the Trowse 10k at Whitlingham Park. The cool conditions were just right for running and amongst the field of 364 runners Robbie James was the first Black Dog to finish in 60th place in a time of 41:38, with Chris Chorley 5 places back in 42:10. Tim Morton finished in 89th place in a time of 43:46, with Bobbie Sauerzapf next in 178th place recording 49:06. Roger Wing Memorial 10K – 10 April 2009

The fourth running of the Roger Wing Memorial 10Km road race, took place this Good Friday. 22 Black Dogs took part in a record field of 224 runners. Full results of the 10K race and the fun run can be found on the Results Page of this website. The Club details are as follows:

Robbie James 40:03 (24th); Chris Chorley 43:11 (48th); Darrell Oldman 45:04 (58th); Richard Dye 45:35 (65th); Ashley Bowden 47:44 (89th); Nigel Gilham 49:01 (100th); Gavin Cole 49:40 (111th); Neil Thomas 49:35 (113th); Bobbie Sauerzapf 49:49 (116th); Tom Pullinger 50:31 (124th); Andrew Smith 50:35 (126th); Carol Maycock 50:59 (130th); Judy Potter 53:48 (156th); Karen Gedge 53;57 (158th); Robin Farrar 57:26 (180th); Patricia Hagan 58:10 (184th); Jemma Neesham 58:32 (186th); Ian Ash 58:42 (187th); Becky Fouhy 60:18 (195th); Rob Donovan 62:48 (207th); Katy James 67:10 (214th); David Cook 71:23 (220th).

The turnout at this event was utterly amazing. And the genuine generosity of runners and sponsors was really heart warming. When the news is so full of doom and gloom it is so good to see the true concern and kindness of those that are able to do something to help those in need of help. The chosen charity for this event was the James Paget Hospital Palliative Care Unit Appeal, which is half way to raising £1.5 ml for a new dedicated unit.

The entry fee was set at £6 with all of this to go to the charity, as Bungay Black Dog Running Club had undertaken to cover all costs involved. Runners were asked to consider either paying a total fee of £10 or an extra £10 on top of the £6 entry fee, therefore giving a further donation to the charity. The generosity of runners was such that virtually all those that entered chose to donate further cash or raised sponsorship via friends and family. There was also a similar act of kindness in the Fun Run, which featured runners aged from 2½s to 42 years old.

Additionally the refreshment stall also raised a substantial sum for the charity with the two ladies Janice Wharton & Grace Cook doing more running about more trying to keep up with the demand, than the runners. Cakes had been donated by members of the running club. The full total raised by this event exceeds £2,700 with a little more sponsorship money to come in. This first real warm day of the year caught the race director, John Wharton on the hop. With the weather forecast 48hrs earlier predicting rain, he was praying that these would only be showers so as not to deter entrants.

The warm weather, coupled with the record entry, did cause some difficulties. There was not enough water provided for the runners either on the course or at the finish. For this the club can only apologies, and give the under taking that in future years it will not happen again. Hopefully this did not spoil the event for the competitors too much. It was really pleasing to see such a good entry in the Fun Run. This event was staged before the main 10K race so that runners who were running the main event could watch, before the main race.

Last year saw the first Fun Run at this event, which attracted 31 entrants, this year there were 60. It was so rewarding to see these mainly youngsters enjoy this one mile run. All received a Cream Egg from the Palliative Care team as they crossed the finish line. The boys and girls who won their age groups were awarded a larger egg at the presentations hosted by Marlene Jervis results co-ordinator. At the presentations for the 10Km category winners, Palliative Care team leader, Jenny Westgate thanked the runners for their efforts in raising this much needed support. She also went on to explain what it was the unit was setting out to do, an added that events such as this helped to educate the public about the meaning of Palliative. !

Paris Marathon - 5 April 2009

A Bungay Black Dog runner Ian Taylor was amongst 31,373 competitors in the Paris Marathon on Sunday 5th April. Run in perfect weather conditions the route took runners past many famous locations including Place de la Concorde, Musée du Louvre, Place de la Bastille, the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame which was striking 10:30am as Taylor ran by. The course also includes two wonderful long sections through Le Bois de Vincennes and Le Bois de Boulogne, two of the most famous city parks, and several miles alongside the River Seine. There were also two underpasses to run through which are not usually available to pedestrians. Taylor was the 1,071st finisher in a time of 3:00:34. The vital seconds were lost in the opening stages of the race due to the density of runners which is always a problem in big city marathons. The first kilometre took Taylor 5:40 to complete against his usual average of 3:36. All the same it was a fine performance with which he felt justifiably proud. The other Black Dog running was Bob Jack who was running his 50th Marathon. At 12 miles Bob had a recurrence of a thigh injury which slowed him down but he still completed the race in 6:38 in 2,5271st place. At 18 miles, as he limped past an outside cafe, a couple waved him over and refreshed Bob with 2 glasses of red wine!!

Joe Cox Half Marathon Stowmarket - 29 March 2009

A cool but sunny day gave good running conditions for 5 Black Dogs who were competing in the Stowmarket organised Joe Cox Half Marathon on Sunday. There were 361 finishers and Chris Chorley was the 1st Black Dog to finish in a time of 1:34:12 in 79th place, an excellent achievement as both he and Bobbie Sauerzapf had completed a 26 mile walk on Saturday! Bobbie was next to finish in 1: 48:13 in 190th overall and also was 1st Female V50. Bob Paul also had a very good run to finish in a time of 1:55:06 in 253rd place. Robin Farrar, running after an enforced injury lay off, was just happy to be competing again, with his time of 2:06:05 to finish in 313th place. Bob Jack is running the Paris Marathon next weekend so treated this as a "warm up jog" and finished in 2:24:51 in 344th place.

Hastings Half Marathon - 15 March 2009

Bungay Black Dog runner Ian Taylor enjoyed the Hastings Marathon so much last December that he returned to the East Sussex town on Sunday 15th March to compete in the Hastings Half. Regarded by many as the best Half Marathon in the UK, and with substantial cash prizes, the race attracts a huge field and fierce competition. The opening five miles contained some hard climbs which gave way to a fairly flat section near the Conquest Hospital. The course then descended by way of Hastings Old Town to the seafront for the final 2.5 miles along the promenade. Sunshine, temperatures of 11° and a light breeze provided almost perfect conditions and Taylor was pleased with his chip time of 1:27:48, being 9 secs faster than last year, which was good for such a demanding course, as shown by split times of 36:04 at 5 miles and 66:50 at 10 miles. This earned him 134th place out of 3,837 finishers.

Forest Of Dean Half Marathon - 15 March 2009

Robbie James also travelled further afield to run in the Forest of Dean Half Marathon organised by the local Rotary Club. A sunny & still day meant that the scenic Gloucestershire woodlands could be enjoyed to the full. The course was mainly off-road with lots of hills on dirt and gravel paths. Robbie had an excellent race, finishing in a time of 1:35:17, being 175th out of a field of 1393.

Broadland Half Marathon - 15 March 2009

Meanwhile, locally, 8 Black Dogs competed in a field of 300 runners in the Broadland Half Marathon. Once again, sunny conditions prevailed, and this proved to be a pleasant run. The undulating course starts & finishes at South Walsham and takes in Ranworth & Woodbastwick. First Black Dog to finish was Chris Chorley in 1:34:37 in 55th position, beating Richard Dye who came 93rd in 1:41:03.

The first club female runner was Bobbie Sauerzapf in an excellent time of 1:48:36 (150th), closely followed by Neil Thomas in 1:49:11 (158th). David Punt was comfortably under the 2 hour mark in 1:56:32 (201st), but Colin Whale was just outside in 2:00:33 (217th). Karen Gedge who has not run competitively since last October, due to injury, was very pleased to finish in 2:02:22 (230th). Finally Bob Jack managed a time of 2:19:32 (272nd).

Wymondham 20 miles - 8 March 2009

Running up a steep hill from Wymondham to Wicklewood, against an extra strong wind is not everyone’s idea of Sunday morning entertainment. However, on this sunny but blustery day, 4 Bungay Black Dogs took part with a field of 263 finishers in the Wymondham 20 miler. This is a popular race, used by many runners as preparation for The London Marathon on 26 April and also our very own Bungay Black Dog Marathon the week before. The first of the Bungay runners to finish was Chris Chorley in 2:45:46 (115th) A fantastic performance, bearing in mind that on the day before, he had competed in the Clumber Park Duathlon. A run of 10k followed by a 40k cycle ride & finishing with a mere 5k run. Bobbie Sauerzapf, came home in an excellent time of 2:55:02 (152nd), and took 2nd in the FV50 category. Sue Potter, training for the Bungay Marathon achieved her target with a time of 3:39:19 (253rd) and bringing up the rear was the intrepid Bob Jack who pulled a muscle at 10 miles, but hobbled home in 4:18:17.

Cambridge Half Marathon - 1 March 2009

On a dry & mild day, Black Dog, ultra runner, Bob Jack took part in the Cambridge Boundary Run ½ marathon. This race resurrected, a few years ago, from the 1940s is organised by Cambridge University Hare & Hounds, one of the oldest running clubs in the UK, founded in 1880. The relatively flat, race follows the medieval boundaries of Cambridge, through pretty villages, fields and woodlands. There is also the option of a full marathon, but Bob has a full schedule of long distance races over the next few months, culminating in the South African, Kalahari Augrabies in October. He will run 250km (155 miles) across the Kalahari Desert for 7 days, carrying his kit. Treating this as a training run, Bob finished in 2:29:51 being 301st out of 309 finishers.

Berkhamsted Half Marathon - 1 March 2009

Bungay Black Dog Runners Chris Chorley and Bobbie Sauerzapf made the journey to Berkhamsted last Sunday to compete in this very popular half marathon. The race, organised by the local Rotary Club, always attracts a big field. This year was no exception with 1191 finishers on a pleasant spring-like day. A lovely route follows the edge of the Chilterns with the occasional challenging hill to spoil any chances of a p.b. The final 4 miles are through Ashridge Forest-typical mature Chilterns deciduous woodland. Chris finished in 1:42:26 (314th) despite having spent 8 minutes assisting a collapsed runner half a mile from the finish. Bobbie came home in a creditable time of 1:53:43 (628th).

Bury St. Edmunds 20 Mile & Nearly 10 - 22 February 2009

Sunday 22nd February was the date for the annual Bury 20 and "Nearly 10" road race. As part of the Suffolk County races 7 Bungay Black Dog members helped with the marshalling of the event. Thanks go to Roy & Margaret Burton, Terry & Hilary Harrison, Nigel & Daryl Edge & Adrian Muttitt for helping which enabled 7 Black Dogs to run in this event along with over 350 runners.

The course is very hilly and coupled with a blustery headwind it made the going tough. However, Ian Taylor thrived in the conditions and blasted around the course in an excellent time of 2:16:29mins in 21st overall. Richard Dye was next in 137th place in 2:44:18 with Chris Chorley 5 minutes behind in 165th place. Bobbie Sauerzapf, enjoying a purple patch in her running, was next in 2:56:37 in 228th with Colin Whale, straight off a night shift, finishing in 314th place in a time of 3: 22:36. His fellow ultra runner, Bob Jack finished in 344th place in a time of 3:51:59.

Christine Muttitt competed in the "nearly 10" as part of her London Marathon training and finished in 109th place in 1:22:29s in afield of over 250 runners and finished in 2nd place in the FV60 category.

Ryde 10 mile - Isle of Wight 1 February 2009

Bungay Black Dog Robin Farrar ventured “off shore” to run the Ryde 10 mile race on the Isle of Wight, on Sunday 1 February. An extremely cold day with a strong easterly gale greeted the field of 376 runners with the added bonus of the first 1½ miles being up hill. The combination of this “undulating” course and the weather conditions was reflected in the finishing times, with the winner coming home in 55:29. Robin finished 286th in 1:30:31. Although he has had better times, this was quite acceptable for this challenging race. The final 1k literally carried a sting in the tail. The sand was being whipped up from the beach by the increasingly bitter wind and causing drifts along the promenade. The sand hit the runners full in the face giving a new meaning to “grit in the teeth”. Many felt that this improved their complexion due this bout of sand blasting.

Worthing Lido 4m - 25 January 2009

Bungay Black Dog runner Ian Taylor competed in West Sussex on a very wet and windy Sunday morning. The out and back course is run mostly along the concrete promenade with a short section on grass at the western end. Taylor started strongly, despite the headwind, and having passed a couple of runners in the last 500m he finished in 17th place out of approximately 450 in a time of 24:29.

The distance was a bit short for Taylor, who then ran back to his house in central Brighton, 12.5 miles away, as good training for the Great East Run. His seafront route took him through Lancing, Shoreham-by-Sea, Southwick, Portslade and Hove.

Benfleet 15m - Canvey Island 25 January 2009

Chris Chorley and Bobbie Sauerzapf also headed south to run the Benfleet 15 mile off road run. 424 runners lined up to run around Canvey Island through mud, over stiles, through knee deep water and at times a strong head wind, just a normal Sunday run for Chris and Bobbie! Chris ran a very good race completing the course in 75th overall in a time of 1:55:41 with Bobbie finishing in 218th in a time of 2:14:37.

Suffolk Cross Country Series (5) – Framlingham - 18 January 2009

The hardy cross country runners lined up at Framlingham and were overjoyed to see the return of the mud after the heavy rainfall over the last week! As in previous races the Bungay Black Dog ladies outshone the men with Lynn Emmett finishing in 37th overall in a time of 35:22, but crucially 2nd female and 1st FV40. Carol Maycock was next at 126th in a time of 45:42 (4th FV50) with Christine Muttitt just behind her in a time of 46:28 in 130th (3rd FV55). Club 10k Handicap - Ditchingham 11 January 2009

On Sunday 11th January Club Captain John Wharton organised the annual Bungay Black Dog Running Club Handicap 10k race. Starting from Ditchingham Village Hall the picturesque course was out and back passing Broome Place and Church and then down towards the Loddon Ingloss water tower. The aim of the race is, in theory, to handicap the runners so they all finish together by using the best 10k times for 2008 with new runners without a time competing for the Novice Trophy.

The 2009 Champion is Ian Taylor, who although starting last, soon sped through the field and passed 2nd/3rd placed Robbie James and Tim Morton over the last 2k to finish in a time of 38mins. Nikkie Watson took the Novice trophy finishing in 45mins with Donna Dean next followed by Polli & Steve Cant.

In the main event Bruce Rayner finished 4th followed by Robin Sawyer, Bob Jack, Ali Morton, Nigel Gilham, Gavin Cole, Neil Thomas, Andrew M Smith, John Wharton, Karen Waters, Katy James, Carol Maycock, Hazel Garrity, Robin Farrar & Rob Donovan. Jim Cooper may have done well but turned up half an hour late so decided to run the course anyway with even a bigger handicap than originally intended! After the presentations John thanked all the marshals and other helpers for ensuring the smooth running of the race and then everyone went to the Duke of York to enjoy a well earned drink and tucked in to the carvery.

Horsford Cross Country 2 - 4 January 2009

In very cold and icy conditions 3 Black Dogs ran the second race in the Horsford Cross Country series, organised by Norwich Road Runners. The course was through woods north of Norwich and with sub zero temperatures the frozen mud made the going difficult for the runners. The ladies’ race was 3 laps and Bobbie Sauerzapf finished in a time of 44:46 and was 1st in the FV50+ age group. In the men’s’ race, which was 4 laps, Robbie James had a good run to finish in 50:43 in 9th overall with Chris Chorley a minute behind in 51:59 and Chris was 5th in the MV50+ age group.

Wymondham 10k - 1 January 2009

Not content with running the day before, Chris & Bobbie then joined 6 other Black Dogs to compete in the New Years Day 10k at Wymondham. This race was again a sell out well before Xmas with over 400 entries and again Chris Chorley was 1st Black Dog to finish in 78th overall in a time of 43:31. David Punt who is running well at present was next back in 46:00 (123rd) with Richard Dye, recovering from a virus, just behind in 46:46 (135th). Nigel Gilham finished in 47:53 (157th) with Bobbie Sauerzapf next in 50:45 (204th).The other 3 Black Dogs all ran together with Rob Donovan in 303rd with a time of 59:40, followed by Phil Neave in 304th place, just 4 seconds behind, in 59:44. Sue Potter just missed the 1 hour mark by 16 seconds in 60:16 (305th). Roland Shaw couldn't get a race number so he just ran the race as a training run and finished along side Nigel Gilham.
