2007 Great East Run

With the weather forecast good in the lead up to the 2007 GREAT EAST RUN there was a good entry in the days just before the weekend. The final total of 630 entrants was a record for the 20Km event. The weather on the day, cool and still was ideal for long distance running.

In the start area there were runners of all abilities and from far and wide. The easy down hill start was soon to change, and before the first 1Km was completed, the gradient turned into a spiteful 1Km climb. At the top of the hill, David Miller of Woodbridge Shufflers, held a narrow lead. He was never to lose this lead. It did, however take him 10Km of determined running before he had seen off the challenges of the City of Norwich runners.

Some of the runners from the more hilly areas of Britain were surprised at how tough the course was. One Welsh man was heard to say,” I never expected any thing as difficult as this. That hill at 19Km is evil”. Unsurprisingly, it was the local runners that dominated the category prizes.

In the ladies categorise it was a runner from Derbyshire that came out on top. Helen Cawthorne from Redhill Runners finished the race in first place one and a half minutes ahead of Norwich Road Runners Anne Flanagan. Many of the runners were very complementary about the event. They found the standard of the facilities and marshals very good.

There were particular positive comments about the very good value of the event. The Goodie Bag sponsored by B 1st Sports shop of Beccles was said by some runners to be the best ever received any where. The beer supplied by sponsors Elgoods Brewery was a well received souvenir. The quality of the engraved medal was noted by many as was caterers John Grooms free soup. All runners spoken to said they would be back next year. One Royston runner commented that he raced all over the country and Europe, but he rated this event the best organised that he had been to."
