Welcome from the Club Captain

John WhartonAs club captain may I welcome you to our club. It does not matter if you have joined the club yet or not, I would suggest you come to our Thursday evening meeting and get a feel of the club. Any body coming to meet a new group of people they do not know, feels apprehensive. We know that, so, we try to make you welcome right from your first visit, by talking to you and telling and showing you what goes on. But if after your first visit you are not sure if its for you, don't just not appear again. Come again the following week and give it another go, or get your questions answered. We are happy for you to come several times before you decide.

We are a running club, we enjoy running, but we cater for more than just runners. A number of the current members do not race, some do not even run!! Some come to the gym session just to keep fit, there are members that are there for purely the social side, yes we do indulge in the odd pint.

We try to be a very social club. We have many club outings. There is the weekend at The Great North Run, club relays, race meetings, social evenings with other clubs, our Christmas party, our Christmas dinner (in March !) club handicap race and training outings. Many of these are on a mini bus with the club paying the cost.

Yes I can be an ogre that chases up people to support the club team at race events, but if you do not wish to race or run I will not pressure you, and you will be just as welcome at the club as any body else. Members range from to well over sixty, male and female, fast and slow. So there is no way you can say " club running is not for me, I only run slow they will leave me behind" There will be people of your standard at the club ( unless your a very fast Kenyan).
